A Hamptons-Chic 30th Birthday, Sailing Around Manhattan Aboard The Manhattan
Regina wanted a party that felt like the Hamptons picked up and set down on a boat, and that’s exactly what she got. About forty guests boarded the chartered yacht The Manhattan at Chelsea Piers just before sunset, stepping into a sage-and-blue color story that ran from the printed “Welcome on Board” programs to the hand-blocked napkins at every place setting. Regina set the tone herself in a chocolate-and-pink polka dot cutout dress with a matching sash, gold hoops, and tortoiseshell sunglasses. Nobody looked like they were trying too hard, and everyone looked like they’d been vacationing together for years.
Setting Sail from Chelsea Piers
The Manhattan has old-world detailing that makes a party feel like an event before the first toast: teak decks, a glassed-in observatory, champagne poured before the boat even clears the dock. Her sister ship, the Manhattan II, sat moored alongside while we boarded. Inside, round tables were fully set with place cards, silver goblets, gold lamps, and fresh white roses, more formal dinner party than casual cruise. Guests moved freely between the warm, glowing interior and the open deck all night, which handed me two completely different visual worlds in the same thirty feet.
A Route Worth Chasing With a Camera
We circled down around the bottom of Manhattan past the Statue of Liberty and the Financial District in pre-sunset gold, up the East River past the bridges to the George Washington Bridge, then back to Chelsea Piers. Halfway through, a real storm rolled in and pushed everyone into the covered areas for about 45 minutes. Instead of deflating the party, it became part of the fun, guests crowding the observatory windows, dancing through the rain. When the sky cleared, they went right back out on deck, and some of my favorite frames came from those in-between minutes.
The Kind of Party Everyone Wishes They’d Been Invited To
Nobody was performing for the room. Regina’s cake arrived under torched, golden meringue with “Happy 30th Birthday Regina” written across the top, and it pulled a real crowd. Later, someone hoisted a custom life preserver stamped “Regina’s 30th” over the dance floor, exactly the kind of detail that says a party was planned with love. Music never let the energy dip, the open bar kept things loose, and the dancing started early and never stopped.
Why This Was My Kind of Shoot
I grew up in Florida getting hauled onto boats constantly, so a moving deck has never felt unstable to me, which meant I could chase light and angles without thinking about my footing. The dress code gave me a rare bonus too: real fashion photography inside an event job. Once the sun went down, I leaned into direct flash for the cake moment and the dance floor, that punchy, editorial look that makes an outfit or a hand-lettered life preserver pop against the dark. It’s a technique I usually save for weddings, and it was exactly right here.
With Thanks to Helena Elizabeth Events
Regina found me through a referral from Helena Elizabeth Events, the NYC and Brooklyn-based wedding and event planning team. It’s always a good sign when a planner I respect sends a client my way for something outside the usual wedding day.
